It is widely used in schools, nurseries, special schools, behavioural units, children’s homes, foster homes, hospitals, dentists, doctors surgeries and libraries.

What is Relax Kids?

Relax Kids has had positive effect on children with autism, hyperactivity, stress, sleeping problems, trauma, OCD, disruptive behaviour, depression, low self-esteem, anger and anxiety issues.

Relax Kids relaxation has helped children cope with a range of stressful situations including bullying, exams, parental divorce, bereavement, long term illness, hospital and doctor’s appointments. Relax Kids works well with the gifted and talented as well as vulnerable and low achievers.

One in ten children have mental health problems – key study by the Office of National Statistics.
Regular relaxation can help children manage stress, anxiety while improving their concentration, focus and listening skills. Relax Kids can also improve creativity and imagination and build confidence and self-esteem.
Relax Kids classes can support children’s physical, mental and emotional health and well-being.

Relaxation helps release endorphins, helping children feel happy and positive. It also helps relax muscles and calm the nervous system whilst boosting the immune system so promoting general good health. Relaxation helps to calm a child’s mind and sharpens their concentration and memory retention which helps them to focus. It also stimulates the imagination and so encourages self expression and self confidence.
Regular relaxation can make a huge impact to a child’s life!

What the training involved:

During this one day training course participants were taught how to take children and young people through a 7 step programme from high energy to low energy. This will include a range of relaxation exercises – movement, games, stretching and breathing techniques, self-massage, affirmations and visualisations. Each participant received a training manual and free Relax Kids CD, this was open to practitioners in County Durham (subject to meeting terms & conditions).

Here’s what previous course participants said about the training

“Very useful to have the time to consider relaxation strategies both to encourage own mindfulness and work with schools”
“I found the course very useful and look forward to using techniques I’ve learned today with children”
“A good variety of skills explained, demonstrated and modelled with an opportunity to have a go in a supportive atmosphere”

Feedback from a member of staff running regular sessions:

I have run after school clubs for infants, juniors and then 2 parent groups. Parents commented that sleeping is 10 times better. I have also worked with a yr 3 class with challenging behaviour. I made it in to a literacy/poetry lesson and then children created their own basic lesson plans- they loved this! I have been running after school sessions which have gone really well. The children were given a tiny rolled up piece of paper with a secret word on ‘happiness’ ‘relaxed’ etc. for them to take home – this was very popular. Parents have been in touch with the school office to say they think it is brilliant.

Please find below a few words from some of the children and young people taking part in Relax Kids:

“I’m doing that Relax Kids stuff in bed and I can sleep”
“I don’t fight with my brother I go to my room, I massage myself and breathe”
“I feel less nervous and tired after Relax Kids”
“I love Relax Kids”

A few words from a parent

I have noticed a big difference in my son’s behaviour during these sessions. He has become much calmer and is happy to sit and be read to before bedtime. He is much more confident in expressing his feelings and to listen to what is being said – rather than getting distracted midway through a conversation. I will try to do as many of the activities suggested – very good experience for my son and myself.”
